Ep. 11–Earl Lloyd, The First African American To Play In The NBA

In 1950, Earl Lloyd (1928 – 2015) became the first African American to play in the NBA, paving the way for basketballs integration on the professional level. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003. On this episode of UMES 30, show host Dr. Joshua K. Dr. Wright speaks with U.S. District Judge (Maryland) George J. Hazel, who was nominated by President Barack Obama and sworn in on May 2, 2014, becoming the youngest District Judge to be appointed to the post.

Ep. 19–‘Invisible Warriors: African American Women In WW2’ The month of March is recognized as National Women’s History Month in the U.S. But women of color are often overlooked when it comes to America’s “Greatest Generation”–the generation of men and women who made important contributions during World War II. Ep. 24–Love & Marriage Among Millennials

According to a 2013 Pew Research Center survey, about nine-in-ten Americans cited love as a very important reason to get married, ahead of making a lifelong commitment and companionship. Millennials–and some Gen-Xers–are choosing to delay marriage until they have completed their education, established careers, and have sound financial footing. This delay may be part of the reason why the divorce rate among Millennials is below 50 percent. Ep. 31-Ex-Redskins Player Dexter Manley On Football, Demons, Redemption
Throughout his life, Dexter Manley has had his share of demons, doggedly trying to outrun them while running down opposing quarterbacks as a member of the Washington Redskins football team for several years during the 1980s. Nicknamed the “Secretary of Defense,” Manley was a two-time Super Bowl champion. Dr. Wright talks with Manley about his football career, past drug addiction, recovery, and his life as a former player for the Washington Redskins.

Dr. Wright talks with Richard C. Willis, founder and CEO of Sankofa International, Inc., a non-profit based in the United States (established in 1993). In 2013, Dr. Wright took a life-changing trip to the West African nation of Ghana, organized by Sankofa International, Inc., whose mission is to enhance the quality of life for Africans living in Ghana. Dr. Wright talks with Sean Gregory, senior sports writer for TIME Magazine.

Gregory has been a staff writer for TIME covering sports since 2002 and has written about everything from the Detroit Pistons’ run to the NBA championship to new marketing efforts in the golf and tennis industries and the rebuilding of Iraq’s Olympic team. His column appears on TIME.com every Friday.

Ep. 34–Parting Shot UMES 30 debuted on Dec. 2, 2018. Over an eight-month period, Dr. Wright interviewed a number of guests covering a wide variety of topics ranging from sports and athletics to self care and the environment. This week’s show looks back at some of the more memorable conversations Dr. Wright had with his guests, including UMES President Dr. Heidi Anderson, UMES alumni/students/educators, author/historian Dr. Peter Levy, TIME Magazine senior sports writer Sean Gregory, 2-time Superbowl champion Dexter Manley, and others. Dr. Wright taught history at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore for nine years. In August 2019, he began a new teaching position at Trinity Washington University in Washington, DC.
